Awesome Company Making DIY Beauty Easier Than Ever
You Need to Know About This Awesome Company Making DIY Beauty Easier Than Ever
I've always been amazed by those Pinterest-savvy people who can turn the contents of a garbage can into a home theater. OK, not quite, but maybe a photo board, or wall art, or a hundred other creative things that my artistically challenged mind can't even think up. Needless to say, I was completely blown away when DIY connoisseurs and cofounders of MakersKit Mike Stone and Jawn McQuade stopped by the office for a DIY beauty tutorial. I watched in amazement as they walked me through creating my own fragrance, lip balm, and lip gloss and tried my best between the ooh-ing and ahh-ing to catch some of their best DIY beauty tips.
Quick background, in case you aren't already familiar with MakersKit: It's a company that has taken the DIY experience and simplified it for even the most creatively challenged person. They offer more than 40 different kits and video tutorials that walk users through making their own lip glosses, mulled wine, mozzarella cheese (yum), cuff links, terrariums—just about everything but the kitchen sink (although maybe that, too, one day). The pair walked me through some of their beauty-oriented kits, and I grilled Stone about his best tips.
What types of ingredients are you using in the beauty products? "Our beauty kits focus on natural ingredients, like food you put in your body. We strive to create beauty kits that are made from simple ingredients you can pronounce. Take our lip balm, for example—it's made from beeswax and coconut oil. And our fragrance: alcohol-free perfume base."
What's the most surprising thing you've learned about beauty products?"How simple and easy it is to make [them] at home. With a little creativity, you can make any beauty product in any color or fragrance you can imagine."
Best piece of DIY beauty advice you can offer: Go. "As the saying goes, measure twice and cut once, and in the case of beauty products, find the best recipes that use the most natural and pure ingredients. Then have the proper tools and supplies ready before you start. Once you have that, be creative! Making your own beauty products is a great way to express your personal style."
How in the world do you make a lip gloss at home? "So easy: Add small amounts of lip balm base (you can make this at home with beeswax, coconut oil, and/or vitamin E oil) and castor oil to a microwave-safe bowl and melt together on low heat in 15-second intervals. Add more oil for a smoother gloss or more lip balm base for a thicker, bolder gloss. Next, add mica powder to color (less for a sheer color, more for a bold, vibrant color). You can also add a bit of stevia for sweetness and essential oil for flavor, if you desire. Lastly, carefully pour the melted contents into a small container (or clean and empty old lip gloss tubes). Allow to fully cool before use."
Any additional beauty kits on the horizon? "Yes! We have some fantastic new kits coming out just in time for the holidays, including our Lavender Bath Bomb Kit, Pumpkin Spice Lip Balm Kit, Blend Your Own Perfume Kit, and Classic Shave Kit."
